Stack-Back Clearance, Measuring & Rail Anchoring

Flawless drapery begins with millimeter-accurate surveying. Miscalculating stack-back clearance blocks incoming daylight, while underestimating static fabric weight results in bowing rails and pulled wall anchors.

Tailoring Tool

Fabric Yardage & Stack-Back Clearance Tool

Input your exact rail span and ceiling drop. The tool dynamically resolves fullness coefficients, fabric width joins, hem allowances, and minimal wall stack clearances.

Calculated Widths: 6 widths
Total Linear Yardage: 18.3 yds
Minimal Wall Stack: 39 in
Cut Length Per Drop: 110 in

The Mathematical Stack-Back Formula

Stack-back is the physical width that drapery occupies when pulled completely open against the side walls. To calculate the track length required to keep 100% of the window clear, apply the architectural rule of thumb:

Total Track Length = Window Reveal Width × 1.30 + 6 inches

Where each lateral stacking zone on either side of a split-draw system equals (Window Width × 0.15) + 3 inches. For a 100-inch window, the track must span 136 inches, providing 18 inches of wall stack on the left and 18 inches on the right.

Window Opening (Width) Heading System Stack-Back Space Per Side Overall Recommended Track Length
60 inches (152 cm) Ripplefold (2.0x) 10.5 inches 81 inches (205 cm)
90 inches (228 cm) Ripplefold (2.0x) 15.0 inches 120 inches (305 cm)
120 inches (305 cm) Pinch Pleat (2.5x) 21.0 inches 162 inches (411 cm)
160 inches (406 cm) Heavy Lined Velvet (2.8x) 30.0 inches 220 inches (558 cm)

Structural Anchoring & Dynamic Loading

A full-height triple-lined pair of curtains spanning 14 feet weighs up to 45 lbs (20 kg). When operated with hand wands or motorized acceleration, dynamic shear loads triple. Mounting into basic hollow drywall anchors guarantees bracket detachment over time.

Timber Stud Fixing

Locate timber studs with electronic scanning. Drive minimum 2.5-inch #10 steel wood screws directly into structural stud centers. Bracket spacing must not exceed 48 inches.

Solid Masonry & Lintel

Drill with masonry percussion bits. Insert high-density nylon expansion plugs (Fischer SX or DuoPower 8mm) with hardened 50mm screws to resist lateral cantilever pull.

Hollow Cavity Toggle Bolts

Where stud alignment is impossible, specify all-metal spring-wing toggle bolts or hollow wall steel anchors rated for a minimum 50 lbs dynamic working load per fixing.
